Surfer

Surfer built its name on a content editor that scores drafts against top-ranking pages, then added an AI Tracker that follows brand mentions across five engines on its higher tiers. The write-then-check workflow suits content teams. The AI monitoring stays lighter than a dedicated visibility platform, and the full engine set costs $182 a month or more.

Index score: 78/100. Surfer is the strongest content editor in the directory, but its AI visibility layer stays secondary to writing and is gated by tier.

Surfer is a content optimization platform that added answer engine tracking on top of its existing editor. Semrush acquired Surfer in 2024, and the product now runs as a standalone content and AI visibility tool inside that portfolio, serving a stated base of more than 150,000 customers across 159 countries.

What Surfer does

The core of the product is the Content Editor: a scoring panel that compares a draft against the pages currently ranking for a target term and returns a numeric score built on NLP analysis of word choice, structure, and topic coverage. Writers edit inside the tool and watch the score move as they add headings, terms, and length.

On top of that editor sits the AI Tracker, which checks how often a brand and its competitors get mentioned or cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. It reports share of voice and flags mention gaps: prompts where a competitor gets cited and the tracked brand does not. A Topical Map feature groups related content ideas into clusters aimed at building coverage of a subject rather than one page at a time.

Pricing, as of July 2026

Surfer prices in USD, billed yearly by default, with monthly billing available at a higher rate:

PlanPrice (yearly billing)AI engine coverage
Discovery$49/moContent Editor only, no AI Tracker
Standard$99/moChatGPT only, refreshed weekly
Pro$182/moChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, refreshed daily
Peace of Mind$299/moSame five engines as Pro, daily refresh, higher usage limits
EnterpriseFrom $999/moCustom scope and limits

Every tier includes a free trial. The gap between Standard and Pro is the one to watch: a buyer signing up for AI tracking at $99 a month gets a single engine on a weekly cycle, and has to move to $182 a month to see daily data across the other four engines the tool supports.

Copilot is missing from Surfer’s coverage at every tier. Teams that need to know how a brand appears in Microsoft’s assistant will not find that data here at any price.

Where Surfer is strong

The tightest integration in the product is between writing and checking. A content team can draft a page, watch the Content Editor score climb toward a target, and then flip to the AI Tracker to see whether that same topic area is generating AI citations for the brand or a competitor. Few tools in this directory keep those two loops in one interface; most separate content scoring and AI visibility into different products entirely.

Native integrations with WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful, and Zapier mean the editor can sit inside an existing publishing workflow rather than forcing a copy-paste step. The Content Audit feature also flags existing pages whose rankings have dropped, which gives editorial teams a maintenance queue alongside new drafts.

Where Surfer falls short

The AI Tracker was built onto a content tool, and it reads that way. There is no technical site audit checking whether AI crawlers can actually reach and parse a site’s pages, no AI bot traffic analytics showing which crawlers visited and what they did once there, and no backlink or mention tracking outside of the AI answer surfaces themselves. A team that wants those functions has to buy separate products and stitch the reporting together.

Engine coverage tops out at five surfaces on the Pro plan, and Copilot is absent from all of them. A brand that needs to track how it shows up across the full spread of assistants, Copilot included, will not get complete coverage from Surfer regardless of tier.

Verdict

Surfer earns its place in the index as the content-editor benchmark: no other tool in this directory ties draft scoring and AI citation checks together as tightly. Content teams who already write and optimize inside Surfer gain a real second signal by adding the AI Tracker, provided they budget for the Pro tier rather than stopping at Standard’s single-engine, once-a-week check.

Teams whose need starts with AI visibility monitoring, technical audits, AI bot traffic, and content execution all under one plan should look at a platform built for that full scope from the start rather than a content editor with tracking layered on. The AI SEO tools index ranks those options, with Temso topping the list on breadth and value; the Temso profile covers what that broader plan includes.

Pros

  • + Content Editor and AI Tracker live in the same workspace, so drafts get scored for both classic rankings and AI citations without switching tools
  • + Entry-tier pricing is accessible for a content-focused SEO tool, starting at $49 a month
  • + Capterra rates Surfer 4.9 out of 5 across 421 reviews, a strong signal for user satisfaction among content teams

Cons

  • - Copilot is not tracked at any tier, and the Standard plan only checks ChatGPT, once a week
  • - Full five-engine, daily-refresh tracking needs the Pro plan at $182 a month or higher
  • - No technical site audit, AI bot traffic reporting, or backlink work; the toolkit stops at content

Best for

  • Content teams that want a single workspace for writing drafts and checking how those drafts perform in AI answers
  • SEO practitioners who already score content against search engine results page competitors and want AI citation checks added on

Not the right fit if

  • Brands that need Copilot coverage or full engine breadth without paying for the top tier
  • Teams that want technical audits, AI bot traffic data, and backlink tracking alongside content, not as separate purchases
